Book Reviews: Wild Thing

Author: Josh Bazell

Heaven and Hell irreverently codified within the pages of a novel – no stops here for Purgatory!  Technically astute, cunningly crass, with a boom-pa rush, Wild Thing thrusts Josh Bazell into the ranks of Hiassen; hellishly funny and heavenly intelligent!  I’m RUNNING to Amazon.com to buy his debut novel Beat the Reaper – if it’s not sold out!

Dr. Pietro Brnwa is back – with an a.k.a. as Dr. Lionel Azimuth – as he’s just come out of the Witness Protection Program with the Mob on his ass.  Working on a cruise ship pulling cruise ship employees’ teeth with pliers, Lionel curses his medical degree, among other things.  Professor Marmoset, Brnwa’s “mentor”, recommends Lionel to Rec Bill, a billionaire who seeks protection for his on staff paleontologist and secret love, Violet Hurst.

When Lionel meets with Rec Bill and Violet, Rec Bill shows them a letter and a video.  The letter is from Reginald Trager, CEO of CFS Outfitters, located in a minute town, Ford Minnesota.  The letter offers a unique tour for a special few, to the tune of $1 million dollars per person, on a lake that is not even on the map.  The Monster of the Deep video, called “The Dr. McQuillen Tape, indicates an insane episode that introduces a creature sited in the lake.  Rec Bill informs Lionel and Violet that he’s sending them to the tiny lake to take the tour, for a first hand view of Loch Ness #2 (or a relative of same).  Seeing as how Dr. Lionel Azimuth (Pietro Brnwa) is an ex hit man, the tour seems harmless enough – but Rec Bill wants to send in his “staff” before he goes on the next “tour” himself.  Lionel’s job is to protect Violet and ensure that she is safe, for she is not only Rec Bill’s paleontologist – he secretly loves her.

Strange, eerie, hilarious and with intellectual diatribes from Lionel that show his genius and intelligence, this book is in the footnotes!  Beside Lionel’s informative footnotes come his irreverent love for nasty-speak, and the combination allures and entrances, for Lionel is a one of a kind character of the best sort.

Wild Thing, with Bazell steering the wheel, plops into its reader’s lap and watches while we suck up every word!  So totally unique, this Jurassic Park double entendre seals the deal in character, plot, prose, and an introverted love story thrown in to boot.  When Violet and Lionel arrive at bizarre Garner Lake, and begin their  tour on adjoining White Lake, they meet quirky, non-salubrious characters who form the perfect frame for an escapade that flaunts Bazell’s talents like a sexy strip tease.

Amazingly amusing, tempestuously irreverent, deliciously dark and dorky, Wild Thing never stops filing its teeth to a razor sharp ending!  Perfecto!!
