I am not really into the vampire/urban fiction genre. I love “Buffy the Vampire Killer” and I thought “Twilight” was endearing. So when I received Carrie Vaughn’s “Kitty’s House of Horrors” – Kitty being a werewolf – I sighed. Deeply. However, and you know me by now, as I read I fell in love with it. Well, not real, deep romantic love – but I am certainly smitten by this urban fantasy, literary novel!
From page one, Vaughn inhabits her characters and infuses them with charm, intelligence and wit. Ok, ok, now for the story line (a very good one).
Kitty has her own syndicated talk show at KNOB radio station. Human and werewolf, she dispenses advice about all things supernatural. She is interviewing two producers at the moment – Joey Provost and Ron Valenti – who have come up with the idea of a snarky reality show pulling all the big name supernatural community into an isolated mountain resort where they will all be filmed for two weeks. The list of participants includes Tina McCannon and Jeffrey Miles – psychics. Tina is a close friend of Kitty’s and she knows Jeffrey. Kitty talks it over with her lawyer/werewolf husband Ben, and Kitty decides to go forward. Ben is in his own reality dealing with the release of their friend Cormac from prison.
When Kitty arrives in Montana she meets the other participants in this strange reality show production. April. Priestess of the Night, and another late night DJ, Jerome Macy, a were-seal and boxer.
Presenting himself as the only non-supernatural fan in the group is Conrad Garrett, an author who defies any existence of the supernatural. Odysseus Grant, a reknowned magician – and a true sorcerer – sits in the living room along with Conrad. He has saved Kitty’s life before and she trusts him. As night falls dimly in the lodge living room, three other people join them. Anastasia, an 800 old vampire, Gemma, her young vampire protégée, and Dorian, their human feeder (he supplies their nurturance by giving them his blood).
The first two days go as expected, until suddenly Provost, Valenti, Cabe – the producers – and the entire crew disappear. Power goes out and the satellite phone is gone. When Kitty goes outside, she find beautiful Dorian murdered on the porch. When she and Jerome wander further outside to the site of the plane that brought them there, they find the camera crew murdered in the plane. So starts the beginning of the true nature of the “show” – they have all been setup –for murder.
As Vaughn captures and holds our attention, Kitty and her friends experience the true horror of the hunted – leaving half of them dead or wounded.
This novel gave me great respect for a genre I had not read before, and the exquisite plot, taut as a tightwire, held me in total suspense. Great job, great genre, the way it is supposed to be done! What I loved about the novel was Vaughn’s superb job of reaching us and taking us inside the lives of her characters, and making us realize that we are all in the same fight, supernatural or human.
