Book Reviews & Giveaway: Permission Slips

Authors: Sherri Shepherd and Laurie Kilmartin

I'm always amazed that when I NEED something that it seems to fall in my lap. This book has been once again, sitting on my nightstand unread for quite a few weeks and I knew that I'd need something to read for my upcoming trip to Los Angeles (if you'd like to know more about that - check out my Red Carpet Marshall's whrrl). I wanted a book that was going to be a quick read, and I figured that Permission Slips would be just that.

Let me start this review by saying that I've never been a big fan of Sherri Shepherd. It's not that I DON'T like her, I just never really paid much attention (and I'm not a regular watcher of The View). My expectations were definitely LOW (and I had some pre-conceived notions about being able to relate to an outspoken comedian).

Once again, I was proven to be WRONG, but that's good.

Permission Slips gives the reader an inside look into Ms. Shepherd's life and you'll find yourself relating on one level or another. It's all about learning (or learning and then stupidly ignoring) from those mistakes that we constantly make. Shepherd and Laurie Kilmartin have created a quick reading self-help book with a big dose of humor and the reminder that we all mess up and we shouldn't beat ourselves up over it.

The book itself is dotted with "permission slips" such as:

On Aging - "So write yourself a permission slip to look your age. And if you're Madonna, write yourself a slip to skip Pilates today."

On Raising Children - "Write yourself a permission slip to humiliate your children as you were humiliated. C'mon. Why should they be spared?"

On Pursuing your Dreams - "Oh this one's easy. Write yourself a slip to do it scared."

The list goes on and on and in essence, no matter what your background (faith, ethnicity or financial) we all struggle with life's bumps and sometimes it's nice to be reminded that we need to listen to our gut and forge ahead.

For me personally, this book reminded me that it's okay to have doubts, and that I don't have to pretend to be the strong one all of the time. So, for that I thank both Sherri Shepherd as well as Laurie Kilmartin (I tend to want to be Superwoman).
