Book and Toy Reviews & Giveaway: The Fairy Godmother Academy

The Fairy Godmother Academy utilizes books and interactive computer media to assist preteen girls to enter into the Magic world of fairies, fairy godmothers and Birdie’s World. The media set introduces Wisdoms to arrive in a dream world called Adventurine. The first book, Birdie's Book, tells the story of Birdie Cramer Bright and her grandmother Mo. The book tells how Birdie and Mo both love plants, fairies and fairy godmothers. This interactive set supports the wonders of growing up, self esteem and magic. Book Two: Kerka’s Book will be available December 22, 2009.

The website offers young girls a portal, friends, wisdoms, an adventurine wardrobe and the million girl choir. Some of the screens offer activities. The Nest Maker screen encourages young participants to make their own nest, based on birds nests pictured.

The Adventurine Wardrobe allows young girls to creatively put together ensembles for Birdie online. The Million Girl choir allows girls to practice singing so that they can join in all the other girls online and protect the Green World and earn their Crown.

The Wisdoms are the crux of the Academy. Girls pick a talisman, form wisdoms and add friends to their online Academy.

My tester was Wendy, who has three daughters, 6, 4, and 2. Her 6 year old reads at third grade level and enjoyed the book although it was a little hard she said. Wendy also said it was hard to log onto the website. She did love the transfers that came with the set, and ironed one on her daughter’s T-shirt.

This interactive media is probably better suited to 8-12 year olds and I found the message of kindness, inner wisdom and fairy godmothers delightful to assist young girls in self esteem and social skills. My 10 year old granddaughter did get a little bored and was willing to stop after a small amount of time on the website, but I feel that this is due to the Wii and other games that she is used to. She has been using interactive media since she was six, and wanted something more intricate.I however, found the website refreshing for its creativity with no violence whatsoever, a needed quality in forming our daughters outlook and self-care. I think this is a great idea, and a wonderful website and book series with lots to do and lots to learn. I will allow that Moms and Grandmothers have to be able to spend the time working with their young ones to go through all the activities and to read the book. Wonderful opportunity for talented Moms to increase their young girls sense of self and their imagination and creativity.

The Fairy Godmother Academy #1: Birdie's Book can be purchased at Amazon.com and other booksellers.
