Book Reviews & Giveaways: I Can See You
Two suicides catch the attention of Minneapolis Detective Noah Webster. He knows they are homicides. One – both women had their eyes glued open. Two - the stools underneath the women are too short for the women to have kicked them away. Not suicides – murders.
Noah Webster, the hunky detective, has a past that haunts him. Twelve years ago his young wife and baby son died in a car accident. For two years now he has been clean and sober.
Eve Wilson also has a story. Kidnapped twice. The last time, by a serial killer, Rob Winters, who cut up her face and stabbed her eight times, then strangled her. She flat lined twice in the ambulance, and lived to recover. Her scars have healed on the outside but on the inside, she too is recovering. Hiding for years in the virtual cyberspace of computers, she now bartends at Sal’s, her mentor and an ex-cop.
Now Eve is a grad student in psychology, her thesis a double-blind study of virtual reality. In Shadowland, people buy avatars to look like they have always wanted themselves to look in real life. They then engage each other at the Shadowland town, with casinos, bars, places to meet other people. There are 500 women in Eve’s study groups. Both murdered women appear in the “at risk” group in Shadowland, meaning that they are losing their real lives, addicted to playing the game incessantly.
As Noah and Eve pair up, the novel swoops into serial killer mode. Noah is a member of the elite “Hat Squad”, detectives who wear hats after their first solve. The Minneapolis newspaper has recently printed a cover story of the Hat Squad detectives, declaring them heroes. Noah’s partner, Jack, GQ handsome, appears on the cover. Three weeks later, four more women – that they know of – are dead. Eve discovers that all but one is in her thesis study.
When the killer targets Eve and Noah, the novel races into overdrive.
This novel is complex, with many fascinating twists and turns, and I couldn’t put it down. I did, however, guess whom the killer was ¾ way through, but then again, the author leaves clues throughout the novel – so read carefully! A great read, and a complex love story between two people who should be bitter but have decided to take the risk to trust, as the scars that bind Eve and Noah also heal them. Even guessing the killer didn't slow me down - I loved it!
