I've read and loved all three of Mr. Lustbader's Jason Bourne novels and couldn't wait to start this fourth of the series. Jason Bourne brings to the action novel what Tom Cruise brings to the adventure film: incredible, exquisitely intricate plots and sub-plots, death-defying "missions,", murders and assasinations involved with high level U.S. government and international political leaders attempting to have Bourne killed.
Unfortunately, Bourne has lost his memory, and in this, the fourth novel of the series, Bourne presents himself in a new light. Having gone to Bali to once again try to retrieve his fragments of memories from another life he doesn't remember, Bourne is shot and nearly killed. However, plots being what they are, Bourne relinquishes his quest to pursue the man in Bali who has tried and almost succeeded in killing him.
Suddenly a U.S. passenger plane carrying U.S. civilians has been shot down over Egyptian airspace. A ground to air missile destroys the plane, and Bourne and his friend Moira meet up with Soraya Moore, director of CI intelligence to discover a lethal and international set of killers and co-conspirators with U.S. Secretary of Defense Bud Halliday, who directs the attention of the President of the U.S. to point the finger at Iran. However, Bourne and company find out that the missile has been transported to the new international oil lines in Shakraki-Nasiri Astara by American military personnel, exposing Halliday's plot to take over the biggest oil fields in Iran.
Bourne, trained long ago by Treadstone, a secret government project is an assasin, and the only other Treadstone member left is Russian Arkadin, who is deeply involved in the plot with Halliday. Great novel, fantastic plot, intricate, circuitous with a plethora of characters both enemy and friend, Jason Bourne again thwarts a world war by figuring out the dynamics and cutting them short.
